A second-round pick in 2020, Schmitt was called up for the first time in May as a replacement for Brandon Crawford. Schmitt ended up bouncing between shortstop (42 games), third base (35 games) and second base (19 games), mostly struggling at the plate until the final day of the season when he hit two home runs. He spent some time back at Triple-A in August and September as the team tried to spark the offense later in the year. Among the 328 big leaguers to see 250-plus plate appearances last season, Schmitt ranked 11th worst by wRC+ (59). While he ended the season on a brief high note, Schmitt is not a lock to start the 2024 season with a regular role.
