Stat Review
How does Wander Suero compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball

  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Suero did not have time to make the Opening Day roster after a July 13 move to the injured list. The reason for Suero's placement on the IL was never disclosed. He made it back Aug. 4 and played a major role in the Nationals' bullpen from there, finishing behind only Tanner Rainey on the team in holds. While Suero does not have the velocity typically associated with back-end arms, he gets plenty of strikeouts with his cutter-changeup-curveball repertoire (career 26.1 K%). He's also been remarkably consistent in three big-league seasons, so while Brad Hand is now in Washington and there are other arms ahead of him, Suero has clearly earned a good deal of trust with manager Dave Martinez. He's an underrated skills play in deep formats.
Suero graduated from middle relief to a setup role in his sophomore campaign and notched 19 holds while ranking third in the majors with 78 appearances. On the surface, his 4.54 ERA and 1.26 WHIP suggest a step backward from his rookie season. However, the right-hander's 3.06 FIP and improved strikeout numbers reveal moderate growth. Suero continued to rely heavily on his cutter in 2019, throwing it 72.1% of the time. His velocity on the pitch increased by over a full tick last season, resulting in a solid 28.4 K% -- nearly six percentage points higher than the mark he posted with the cutter in 2018. Suero's Achilles heel in 2019 was the big inning; he held opponents scoreless in 59 of his 78 outings but gave up multiple earned runs in 11 of the other 19 appearances. If Suero can improve his consistency and retain a high-leverage role in 2020, he could emerge as a viable option in holds leagues.
