2024 Fantasy Outlook
Barlow posted a poor 5.35 ERA over his first 38.2 innings with Kansas City last season, but he rebounded following a trade to San Diego, closing out the year with a 3.07 ERA across his final 29.1 innings. All said, he finished with the worst ERA (4.37) and second-worst WHIP (1.40) of his career, while posting his lowest save total (13) in 3 years. Barlow continues to struggle when he throws his 4-seam fastball and sinker, but the breaking pitches he throws a combined 70-plus percent of the time remain effective. The right-hander's save opportunities figure to decline even more after Cleveland acquired Barlow in November, but setting up Emmanuel Clase should still afford him some ancillary save chances. Picks up win Tuesday
Barlow (1-2) struck out one without allowing a baserunner over two-thirds of an inning to earn the win Tuesday over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Barlow entered with one on and one out in the top of the seventh inning. The baserunner, Rob Refsnyder, was erased when he was caught stealing, and Barlow struck out Enmanuel Valdez to end the inning. The Guardians then rallied ahead in their half of the frame. After a rough start to the season, Barlow has limited opponents to one run on three hits and a walk over his last 5.1 innings. It is notable that he entered the game with the Guardians behind while Hunter Gaddis, who has worked himself into the late-inning mix, pitched the eighth. Barlow is at a 4.09 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB through 11 innings overall, adding a save and five holds through 12 appearances.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Padres trying to move
The Padres are "actively trying to move" Barlow prior to Friday's non-tender deadline, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Barlow posted a 4.37 ERA with 34 walks in 68 innings in 2023 and has seen his stuff decline, perhaps due in part to how hard he's been worked. The 30-year-old did record 79 strikeouts over those 68 frames, though, so the Padres should still be able to find a taker for him as they look to shed his $6 million salary.

2022
2021
2020
Barlow was a workhorse for the Royals, finishing with 74.1 innings that tied a career high and was most among closers. The 30-year-old was effective in those innings, posting career best marks in multiple categories with a 2.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, seven wins and 24 saves. Barlow's 2022 success might be attributed to an adjustment in his secondary offerings. He threw his 4-seamer (24% pitch usage) less often in favor of his curve (31%), the latter of which stifled opposing hitters to a mere .138 BA and .202 SLG. His slider (45%) remained effective as his primary pitch, but he lost 1.7 mph of zip on his fastball, averaging only 93.6 mph. Only 6 of his 79 strikeouts came via the 4-seamer, as batters often teed off on the pitch (.554 SLG). Barlow's pitch mix tweak should be one he carries into 2023 as he enters year 2 of salary arbitration. Draft him with confidence based on recent track record and innings ceiling, but keep in mind saves might not be as bountiful as other closers.
