Kloffenstein was optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals on Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kloffenstein earned a spot on the Cardinals' 40-man roster after registering an impressive 3.16 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 140:55 K:BB over 128 innings in 2023 between Double-A and Triple-A. If Kloffenstein is effective with Memphis early in the season, he could see some time in the majors in 2024.

2020
Most top prospects spent the summer at alternate training sites, but Kloffenstein took a road less traveled. He played indy ball in a four-team league in Texas -- the continent's highest level of organized baseball outside of MLB in 2020. At 19, he was the youngest player in the league by four years, often facing Triple-A and Quad-A hitters. His pitching coach was none other than the league's founder, Roger Clemens. He was limited to three-inning stints and logged almost a strikeout per inning while firing scoreless outings in five of his last eight appearances. Perhaps most importantly, Kloffenstein's five-pitch mix is now headlined by a four-seamer that touches 99 mph and a sinker that touches 97. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound righty's slider is a third plus pitch, and he's working on getting his curveball and changeup there as well. Harnessing his command will be his top priority in his full-season debut.
Toronto gave Kloffenstein first-round money ($2.45 million) after selecting him in the third round in 2018. The 6-foot-5 righty barely pitched after signing, but he lived up to the hype in 2019, dominating Northwest League hitters while showcasing a deep arsenal. He doesn't turn 20 until August, but already has a low-90s fastball that touches 95 mph and a curveball, slider and changeup that could all be above-average or better. His 60.1 GB% was elite and he logged a 1.61 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB in 44.2 innings over his final eight starts. He is listed at 243 pounds, and while the paint is dry on his physical development, he carries that weight well, looking the part of a prototypical power starter who eats innings. Given his age, it's possible that all four pitches improve over the next couple years, but they won't have to for him to be a mid-rotation starter.
