Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
A switch-hitting center fielder with 70-grade speed and good contact skill, Jimenez is pretty tooled up, but groundball rates north of 60% in 2018 and 2019 made it hard to fully buy into him becoming an impact big leaguer. He has added muscle and worked on tapping into some power during the fall instructional league. His hand-eye coordination is lauded, as he only picked up switch hitting a couple years ago, and he has a chance to be a plus defender in center field thanks to a plus arm to go with his wheels. A realistic ceiling seems to be something along the lines of a switch-hitting Lorenzo Cain, but he is still just 20 and hasn't played full-season ball, so it's too early to feel confident about where his batting average and power will end up against advanced pitchers. Even with the uncertain offensive profile, his speed gives him a high ceiling in fantasy. He will shoot up lists if he hits at Low-A.
He has only stolen 30 bases on 50 attempts as a pro, but Jimenez gets clocked as a 70-grade runner, so the hope is he becomes an efficient base stealer capable of swiping 30-plus bags in a MLB season. Barring a major swing change, he will need to be a good source of steals, because he logged a 60.5 GB% in 2018 and was even worse last year (63.9 GB%) in short-season ball. Wilson Ramos (62.4 GB%) was the only qualified big leaguer with a groundball rate over 60% and only 15 qualifiers were over 50%. For now, the switch-hitting Jimenez will keep hitting for very high batting averages by utilizing this opposite-field (44.8 Oppo%) groundball approach, but that will be much less effective in the upper levels. He has the bat-to-ball skill (career 14.5 K%) to be a Lorenzo Cain type as long as he increases his launch angle somewhat. Jimenez will head to Low-A for his age-19/20 season with some adjustments to make.
