Seth Johnson

25-Year-Old PitcherP
Baltimore Orioles
2024 Fantasy Outlook
He returned last season from Tommy John surgery and threw just 10.1 innings. He converted from shortstop to starting pitcher in college before the Rays selected him 40th overall in 2019. The Orioles were willing to stash him on the 40-man roster while he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He has a plus fastball, plus slider, but this will be a big year for him to show he has the command, health and third pitch to remain a starting pitcher. Read Past Outlooks

$Signed a $1.72 million contract with the Rays in June of 2019. Traded to the Orioles in August of 2022.
Sent to minor-league camp
PBaltimore Orioles  AA
March 8, 2024
Johnson was optioned to minor-league camp by the Orioles on Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson missed most of 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he ended the year healthy and made one scoreless appearance this spring before getting cut. The 25-year-old needs to make up for lost time in the minors but could push to debut at some point in 2024.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Johnson is following a similar path to Dodgers top pitching prospect Josiah Gray. Both were amateur shortstops who moved to the mound in effort to advance their baseball careers. Johnson, whom the Rays selected with the No. 40 overall pick in 2019, had a low-to-mid-90s fastball with late life when he was drafted, and he was touching 99 mph during the fall instructional league. Like Gray, he seems to be making exponential improvements as he gets further removed from being a position player. Johnson's slider is a second plus pitch and he has shown more feel for a changeup than the typical conversion project. The 6-foot-1 righty has an athletic delivery and projects for at least average command and control. He should spend his age-22 season at High-A with a chance to see Double-A if he impresses.

Johnson (elbow) said Tuesday that he will start his throwing program in mid-January with the goal of pitching in rehab games in the minors in August, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. "Pretty much I can do everything except for actually throwing a baseball or throwing medicine balls. As far as upper-body lifts, I'm pretty much cleared for all that stuff," Johnson said. "I'm hoping to be able to pitch by next August, maybe in some Complex League games."
