Headed to NFL
December 3, 2022
Gray announced Saturday via his personal Twitter account that he will forgo playing in Oklahoma's Dec. 29 Cheez-It Bowl matchup with Florida State while he begins preparing for the 2023 NFL Draft.
ANALYSIS
After spending first two collegiate seasons with Tennessee, Gray arrived in Norman as a transfer ahead of the 2021 campaign. The 5-foot-10, 211-pound Gray stepped into a featured role out of the backfield as a senior in 2022, carrying 213 times for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns to go with 33 receptions (on 44 targets) for 229 yards. His departure leaves Jovantae Barnes as the next man up on the depth chart at running back.

Gray will look to establish himself as the top running back in a rather young backfield at Oklahoma which is under a completely new coaching regime. Last season, he played second fiddle to Kennedy Brooks with 412 yards and two touchdowns on 78 carries. He also nabbed 23 catches for 229 yards and two touchdowns on 29 targets which shows the kind of versatility he has. Despite limited touches, a 5.3 yards per carry average is impressive and suggests that there's some upside with more volume. Oklahoma is still expected to have an explosive offense with Jeff Lebby at offensive coordinator.
The Tennessee transfer was a major backfield acquisition for the Sooners this offseason and brings speed and pass-catching ability to complement the powerful Kennedy Brooks. Gray averaged 5.1 YPC over 258 carries at UT despite playing in bad offenses that rarely threatened defenses with the pass. Things will be different for him in Norman in that regard, so an efficiency and touchdown boost can be expected. Brooks’ return after opting out complicates the backfield pecking order but Gray’s complete skillset (30 catches on 33 targets in 2020) will secure him a role.
Gray was one of three Tennessee running backs to receive at least 100 carries in 2019. The freshman was arguably the best performer of the trio, which included Ty Chandler and Tim Jordan. Gray rushed for 539 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 5.3 yards per tote. He also proved the most dynamic pass catcher out of the backfield, reeling in 13 passes for 115 yards and an additional score. The aforementioned Jordan was arrested in the offseason and his status for the upcoming season is up in the air, but Chandler was the leading rusher last year and will return. While Gray appears to be the most talented of the trio, his upside could be limited due to the other available options.
