Weekly Rankings: Week 5 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Bye Weeks Officially begin: Detroit, Green Bay

***BRONCOS-PATRIOTS GAME POSTPONED TO WEEK 6! Bills-Titans scheduled for Tuesday, but it's still very tenuous. One more player positive test and that game will have to be postponed.

Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.

Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:

- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.

These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Player X vs. Player Y?" without any other mitigating factors. Of course, I welcome debate - if you think I'm wrong, let me know. But please check out the rankings first before asking your start/sit question. This truly reflects my opinion in my leagues.

These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our

Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights, roughly around 10:00 pm PT. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning. I will post at the top of the article in bold font when ranking updates are in progress and when they're complete.

I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.

Quarterbacks

1.Russell Wilson SEA vs. MIN
2.*Patrick Mahomes KC vs. LV
Note: Stymied by the Pats for over half the game, Mahomes recovered for two second half touchdowns, which was enough for Monday night.
3.*Lamar Jackson BAL vs. CIN
Note: Sat out practice on Wednesday with a 'minor knee injury.' He also missed on Thursday, dealing with both the knee and an illness, but is still expected to play Sunday. ***Full practice Friday, will start as usual.***
4.Dak Prescott DAL vs. NYG
5.*Josh Allen BUF at TEN
Note: Briefly went to the locker room to get his left shoulder examined, but didn't miss a play. Full practice on Wednesday.
6.*Deshaun Watson HOU vs. JAX
Note: How will the coaching change and presumably the play-calling change affect Watson's output? I contend the biggest problem remains the Texans receivers struggling to gain separation.
7.*Kyler Murray ARZ at NYJ
Note: Murray had three passing touchdowns, but only 133 yards on 31 attempts.
8.*Matt Ryan ATL vs. CAR
Note: Ryan was held without a TD pass in the loss to the Packers. He was missing Julio Jones for half the game and Calvin Ridley wasn't 100 percent, but Ryan also missed on a few key throws in the process.
9.Tom Brady TB at CHI
10.Kirk Cousins MIN at SEA
11.Drew Brees NO vs. LAC
12.*Jared Goff LA at WAS
Note: One big play with Cooper Kupp rescued a snoozer of a game from Goff against the G-Men.
13.Gardner Minshew JAC at HOU
14.Teddy Bridgewater CAR at ATL
15.Daniel Jones NYG at DAL
16.*Jimmy Garoppolo SF vs. MIA
Note: The Niners are not sure about Garolppolo's ankle for Week 5. The poor performance Sunday night from Nick Mullens has increased the sense of urgency for Jimmy G's return. Limited practice on Wednesday - that seems like a positive step, but the next two days will tell the tale. He also practiced on Thursday, though the degree of involvement still isn't known. ***Officially cleared to start Sunday.***
17.Philip Rivers IND at CLE
18.Ben Roethlisberger PIT vs. PHI
19.*Ryan Fitzpatrick MIA at SF
Note: Confirmed as the starter for Week 5, but once again, the question is being asked about when Tua Tagovailoa will take over.
20.Baker Mayfield CLE vs. IND
21.*Justin Herbert LAC at NO
Note: Coach Anthony Lynn won't yet commit to Herbert getting the start this week. ***Officially the full-time starter over Taylor.***
22.Derek Carr LV at KC
23.*Ryan Tannehill TEN vs. BUF
Note: ***Tentatively scheduled to play on Tuesday.***
24.*Carson Wentz PHI at PIT
Note: Wentz made up for the lack of wide receivers by beating the Niners on the ground, rushing for 37 yards and a touchdown. He'll need a little more firepower this week against the Steelers and might have to do it without RT Lane Johnson (ankle).
25.Joe Burrow CIN at BAL
26.*Nick Foles CHI vs. TB
Note: Foles rode the struggle bus for most of the loss to the Colts, though a late touchdown pass to Allen Robinson made his day passable.
27.*Kyle Allen WAS vs. LAR
Note: Named the starter over Dwayne Haskins, who was bumped down to third string behind Alex Smith.
28.*Joe Flacco NYJ vs. ARI
Note: Starting in place of Sam Darnold, who was unable to practice on Wednesday and is out this week.
29.*C.J. Beathard SF vs. MIA
Note: Took over late for Nick Mullens and went 14-for-19 for 138 yards and a touchdown, with a Hail Mary falling by the wayside on the last play of the game. ***Will serve as the backup, with Nick Mullens downgraded to third-string.***
30.*Dwayne Haskins WAS vs. LAR
Note: Didn't turn the ball over, but this wasn't a great game against the Ravens. In particular he took a bad sack when the game was still sort of close - the Football Team had first-and-goal on the 15 after a penalty, and on the subsequent play he kept backpedaling all the way to the 32 before getting sacked. Benched for Kyle Allen and demoted to third string.
31.*Nick Mullens SF vs. MIA
Note: Fourth quarter turnovers from Mullens (one fumble, one pick-six) cost the Niners the game against the Eagles on Sunday night, and earned his benching for C.J. Beathard. ***Officially downgraded to third-string quarterback.***
32.*Tyrod Taylor LAC at NO
Note: (Lungs) Status for Week 5 is not yet clear. Officially the backup, and also officially out this week.
33.*Sam Darnold NYJ vs. ARI
Note: Darnold suffered a sprained AC joint in his shoulder in the Thursday night loss to the Broncos. He's likely to miss time to Joe Flacco, though he still hopes to play this week.
34.*Drew Lock DEN at
Note: (Shoulder) Practiced on a limited basis Wednesday - it's his first practice since the injury. I doubt that he'll play this week, but I'm listing him just in case. ***With the game getting moved back to Monday, Lock was able to get in an extra day of practice and is listed as questionable.***
35.*Brett Rypien DEN at
Note: *** Drew Lock is now listed as questionable, and with the game moved to Monday night, it's hard to use Rypien with confidence.***
36.*Jarrett Stidham NE at
Note: Stidham took over for Brian Hoyer and had a mixed bag - he took the Pats for their lone touchdown drive, but also threw two interceptions (one of which wasn't his fault), and overall was 5-of-13 for 60 yards. ***Reports suggest that Stidham will start, though nothing is official yet.***
37.*Cam Newton NE at
Note: Newton (COVID-19) has been asymptomatic since his positive test on Saturday morning. Nonetheless he's unlikely to receive clearance to play until after the Patriots' Week 6 bye.

Running Backs

1.Alvin Kamara NO vs. LAC
2.Ezekiel Elliott DAL vs. NYG
3.Dalvin Cook MIN at SEA
4.Derrick Henry TEN vs. BUF
5.Clyde Edwards-Helaire KC vs. LV
6.James Conner PIT vs. PHI
7.*Chris Carson SEA vs. MIN
Note: Carson not only played in Week 4, but played well, scoring twice. He briefly was evaluated for a concussion but was cleared and returned. (Knee) Limited in practice Wednesday.
8.Josh Jacobs LV at KC
9.James Robinson JAC at HOU
10.*Kareem Hunt CLE vs. IND
Note: Hunt was working through a groin injury last week, which is why D'Ernest Johnson was used so much last week after Nick Chubb got hurt. This is shaping up similar to last week - Hunt has been limited in practice both Wednesday and Thursday. ***Cleared from the injury list after a full practice Friday.***
11.Miles Sanders PHI at PIT
12.*Joe Mixon CIN at BAL
Note: Finally had a big game, which included six catches (and none for Giovani Bernard). Added to the injury list Thursday with a shin injury and was limited at practice. ***Practiced without problems Friday, expected to play.***
13.Mike Davis CAR at ATL
14.*Jonathan Taylor IND at CLE
Note: Clearly the Colts' best back, but having to share the workload with both Hines and Wilkins puts a pretty big drag on his value.
15.*Kenyan Drake ARZ at NYJ
Note: (Chest) Worked out without limitations on Monday and should be back inaction, but of larger concern is his lack of performance so far, especially in the passing game, where he's been targeted only five times.
16.*Ronald Jones TB at CHI
Note: Jones was really effective running the ball, but also dropped three passes (two officially - one drop was wiped out via penalty).
17.Todd Gurley ATL vs. CAR
18.Mark Ingram BAL vs. CIN
19.David Johnson HOU vs. JAX
20.Devin Singletary BUF at TEN
21.Antonio Gibson WAS vs. LAR
22.*Jerick McKinnon SF vs. MIA
Note: ***Has scored each week this season, but now has to share carries with Raheem Mostert.***
23.Myles Gaskin MIA at SF
24.David Montgomery CHI vs. TB
25.Joshua Kelley LAC at NO
26.*Le'Veon Bell NYJ vs. ARI
Note: (Hamstring) Could return this week. Looked good in his return to practice and is likely to play this week. ***Bell has officially been activated off injured reserve and will play this week.***
27.Latavius Murray NO vs. LAC
28.Devonta Freeman NYG at DAL
29.*Darrell Henderson LA at WAS
Note: Henderson took a backseat to Malcolm Brown in the Rams' backfield Sunday, and now Cam Akers could return.
30.*Raheem Mostert SF vs. MIA
Note: (Knee) The Niners hope to get Mostert back at practice Wednesday. Limited return to practice on Wednesday. ***Limited practice all week, but is on track to play. The Niners play at 4:05 ET.***
31.J.K. Dobbins BAL vs. CIN
32.Nyheim Hines IND at CLE
33.Malcolm Brown LA at WAS
34.*Ke'Shawn Vaughn TB at CHI
Note: Caught a touchdown pass in the comeback win over the Chargers. He might be heavily involved in Week 5 if both LeSean McCoy and Leonard Fournette have to sit out.
35.*Duke Johnson HOU vs. JAX
Note: On the field for roughly 35 percent of the snaps and looked pretty good at times. With a new coaching staff, it's possible he could be involved more often.
36.Brian Hill ATL vs. CAR
37.J.D. McKissic WAS vs. LAR
38.*Chase Edmonds ARZ at NYJ
Note: Edmonds scored a touchdown late while Kenyan Drake (chest) was out, but Drake was able to work out on Monday morning and should be good to go for this week.
39.Alexander Mattison MIN at SEA
40.Benny Snell PIT vs. PHI
41.*D'Ernest Johnson CLE vs. IND
Note: Johnson has 95 yards rushing on 13 carries in the win over the Cowboys after Nick Chubb got hurt.
42.*Chris Thompson JAC at HOU
Note: Thompson had a diminished role in the loss against the Bengals.
43.Giovani Bernard CIN at BAL
44.Wayne Gallman NYG at DAL
45.*Cam Akers LA at WAS
Note: (Ribs) Coach Sean McVay expects that Akers will be able to return this week. Practice reps were capped on Wednesday. ***Full practice participant Friday, set to play Sunday.***
46.Jordan Howard MIA at SF
47.Tony Pollard DAL vs. NYG
48.Boston Scott PHI at PIT
49.*Justin Jackson LAC at NO
Note: Jackson had eight carries and two catches in the loss to the Bucs after Ekeler got hurt, but only for a combined 25 yards.
50.Travis Homer SEA vs. MIN
51.*Frank Gore NYJ vs. ARI
Note: Lev Bell will probably return this week, reverting Gore back to a complimentary role.
52.Matt Breida MIA at SF
53.Darrel Williams KC vs. LV
54.Peyton Barber WAS vs. LAR
55.Corey Clement PHI at PIT
56.Dion Lewis NYG at DAL
57.*Jeff Wilson SF vs. MIA
Note: ***Moved down significantly with Raheem Mostert likely to return.***
58.Devontae Booker LV at KC
59.*Jordan Wilkins IND at CLE
Note: Wilkins played 12 snaps and had nine carries and a catch on those 12 snaps.
60.La'Mical Perine NYJ vs. ARI
61.Darrynton Evans TEN vs. BUF
62.*Jalen Richard LV at KC
Note: Tweaked his ankle in the loss to the Bills. Limited practice Wednesday.
63.*Zack Moss BUF at TEN
Note: (Toe) Still limited at practice. ***Full participant in Saturday's practice, listed as questionable.***
64.*Carlos Hyde SEA vs. MIN
Note: (Shoulder) Sat out last week and might be rested again in Week 5, with the Seahawks on bye in Week 6. Won't take contact in practice all week, though coach Pete Carroll is optimistic about his status for the weekend. Pete Carroll is always optimistic about injured players, though that optimism was warranted with Chris Carson last week. ***LIsted as questionable again.***
65.*Leonard Fournette TB at CHI
Note: (Ankle) Showing some improvement, but will likely be a game-time decision Thursday night. Listed as doubtful.
66.*Tevin Coleman SF vs. MIA
67.*Christian McCaffrey CAR at ATL
68.*LeSean McCoy TB at CHI
Note: (Ankle) Week-to-week, unlikely to play on Thursday night. Ruled out for Thursday night.
69.*Sony Michel NE at

70.*Nick Chubb CLE vs. IND

71.*Austin Ekeler LAC at NO
Note: Out for four-to-six weeks with a hamstring injury and a hyperextended knee.
72.Melvin Gordon DEN at

Note: Frustrating shutout on Monday night, including a potential touchdown late where Matt Ryan underthrew the ball. Was the Packers' defense just that good, or was Ridley less than 100 percent?
