Willis announced Wednesday that he will retire from the NFL to pursue a future in the ministry, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.

ANALYSIS
Willis was drafted by the Colts in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and was a consistent producer in Indianapolis' secondary over the past three seasons. He ends his career with 219 tackles, 11 pass deflections, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks and one defensive touchdown. The Colts added veterans Rodney McLeod and Armani Watts in free agency this offseason and traded up to draft Nick Cross, so the trio of newcomers will likely absorb the majority Willis' vacated snaps in 2022.

Willis flashed DB1 upside in his 2019 rookie season, and last year he all but proved it with career-high numbers across the board and strong results in coverage. He picked up a variety of slight injuries along the way, limiting him to 842 snaps in 14 games, but if Willis stays active the whole year he should hover around triple-digit tackles fairly comfortably. Through two years, his per-snap tackle rate projects for about 106 per 1,000 snaps, and his 2021 workload should head well north of that workload. If Willis falls short of 100 tackles it would disappoint.

Despite dealing with a distressing family situation for most of the year, Willis showed a lot of promise both on the real field and as an IDP. Expectations were modest for him as a fourth-round pick out of Michigan State, but playing just 631 defensive snaps he totaled 71 tackles. That would project to about 112 tackles, illustrating the top-10 defensive back IDP upside he would possess as a three-down player. The Colts so far haven't re-signed prior strong safety Clayton Geathers, and as long as they don't it would seem like Willis is the top candidate remaining. Furthermore, Willis might play ahead of Geathers even if the Colts re-sign the latter.
