Hard-on-puck-pivot drafted 14th
CPittsburgh Penguins  Juniors
June 28, 2023
Yager was selected 14th overall by the Penguins in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Yager is a driven, hard-on-the-puck pivot with a nose for the puck and a rocket shot -- his release is ridiculous. Sounds great, right? You bet, from an on-ice perspective, but perhaps less-so through a fantasy lens. Yager is sub-six-foot with average wheels and puck skills, so he's not a slam-dunk top-six guy. But his attention to detail and drive make him a potential middle-six forechecker who can pop in 20 goals. And if he can fill out his 166-pound frame, Yager could play up on the second line, and his shot certainly has PP1 quality. He's sturdy, not a star.

Facing elevated expectations
CPittsburgh Penguins  Juniors
April 19, 2024
Yager is one of a handful of prospects general manager Kyle Dubas expects "to push" for a lineup spot next year, Rob Rossi of The Athletic reports Friday.
ANALYSIS
Yager is coming off a career year with WHL Moose Jaw, having recorded a personal-best 35 goals and 95 points in 57 contests. The 19-year-old first-round draft pick will likely make the jump to the professional ranks for the 2024-25 campaign even if he doesn't crack the Penguins' roster coming out of training camp. Still, Dubas has stressed the need for the team to get younger, and adding Yager would certainly be a step in the right direction.
