Pedro Munhoz

The Young Punisher

Brazil

Drops another decision
BantamweightUFC
March 9, 2024
Munhoz lost to Kyler Phillips via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC 299 on Saturday in Miami.
ANALYSIS
No fighter on the UFC roster is more durable than Munhoz, who at age 37, has yet to be stopped in more than 30 professional fights. But just because he's seeing the final bell doesn't mean he's winning. In fact, Pedro has been dropping decisions like nobody's business of late. He's too tough for his own good during striking exchanges, and he's simply unable to keep up with the speed and athleticism of younger opponents such as Phillips. Munhoz is 2-6 (1NC) in his last nine fights dating back to June 2019. Time is running out for "The Young Punisher."

Munhoz is scheduled to face Kyler Phillips in a bantamweight bout at UFC 299 in Miami on March 9, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Muhnoz will look to defend his spot on the bantamweight rankings against an unranked fighter in the division but coming off five wins in his first six UFC fights. As for Muhnoz, he will try to redeem himself after losing to Marlon Vera via unanimous decision at UFC 292.
High output not enough in loss
BantamweightUFC
August 20, 2023
Munoz lost to Marlon Vera via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC 292 on Saturday in Boston.
ANALYSIS
Munhoz looked on point in the early going, using his leg kicks and pace to seemingly jump out ahead of "Chito" in the eyes of the judges. As he so often does, however, Vera found his footing as the fight wore on, punctuating his victory with a dominant display in round three. "Young Punisher" seems built for three-round fights as someone who can sprint to the finish line, but there just isn't enough variety in his attack to decisively beat the fighters that occupy the top of the division. Munhoz falls to 20-8-0 (2 NC) in professional MMA as a result of the loss.
Fills in for Cejudo
BantamweightUFC
July 7, 2023
Munhoz will take on Marlon Vera in a bantamweight fight on August 19, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Munhoz is set to replace Henry Cejudo in the Aug. 19 bout. Vera stands two-inches taller than Munhoz while also sporting a five-inch reach advantage. The two fighters both prefer to keep the fight upright, averaging less than 1.0 takedowns landed per minute. Munhoz lands significant strikes at a higher rate (5.3) than Vera (4.09) while also defending against significant strikes at a higher percentage.
Rebounds with strong effort
BantamweightUFC
April 15, 2023
Munhoz defeated Chris Gutierrez via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC on ESPN 44 on Saturday in Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Munhoz entered with a shocking single victory in his last six fights (1-4, 1NC), so it's not a surprise he found himself a +170 underdog. That said, those four defeats came against Dominick Cruz, Jose Aldo, Aljamain Sterling and Frankie Edgar, back when Edgar had some gas left in the tank. Recent struggles aside, Munhoz has always hit hard, as Gutierrez found out here. He simply outclassed his opponent in what was primarily a boxing match. Pedro's Round 1 knockdown was by far the biggest moment of the fight, and he was never really forced into any compromising situations defensively by Gutierrez. Munhoz's rough stretch has derailed his chances of remaining title relevant at 135 pounds, but this win should help ensure he gets another fight with the company.
Fighting Chris Gutierrez
BantamweightUFC
January 20, 2023
Munhoz (eye) agreed to face Chris Gutierrez in a bantamweight bout at UFC's April 15 event, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
An accidental eye poke resulted in a no contest for Munhoz's matchup with Sean O'Malley in July, and he's looking for his first victory since February of 2021. Gutierrez is unbeaten during that same stretch and is coming off a dominant victory over Frankie Edgar in November.
