Muhammad Mokaev

The Punisher

Undefeated record remains

March 2, 2024
Mokaev defeated Alex Perez via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was another middling performance from Mokaev, albeit another victory. Muhammad continues to be a massive favorite each and every time he steps into the Octagon, and while he performs fairly well, he's far from dominating. He landed just 3-of-20 takedowns against Perez and won the total strike battle by a 56-47 count. On one hand, the constant threat of the takedown is providing opportunities for Mokaev offensively, but on the other, he really isn't taking advantage of it. He won't be 24 years of age until the end of July, so there's room for improvement going forward, but Mokaev doesn't feel like a top guy at 125 pounds at the moment.

Alex Perez up next
FlyweightUFC
December 6, 2023
Mokaev will compete against Alex Perez in a flyweight fight at UFC Saudi Arabia on March 2, according to Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Mokaev will look to continue his unbeaten run by defeating No. 7 flyweight Perez. Ideally for the former, he can be that one opponent Perez does not have to withdraw from fighting against, as it has unfortunately been nine times since May of 2021.
Taps out Tim Elliott late
FlyweightUFC
October 21, 2023
Mokaev defeated Tim Elliott via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 3:03 of Round 3 at UFC 294 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
ANALYSIS
Mokaev started slowly, spending far too much of the opening frame on his back, but he picked up the pace the rest of the way and appeared to be cruising to a decision win. Little did we know at the time that two of the three judges had Elliott up 20-18 heading into Round 3. In other words, Mokaev was going to lose a decision if the submission didn't materialize. That submission would also go on to win him a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. Muhammad's secondary skills need work, but he's a high-end wrestler, very strong for the division and won't turn 24 years of age until next July. There's going to be some bumps in the road along the way, but Mokaev's ceiling is about as high as any 125-pounder on the UFC roster.

Mokaev will take on Tim Elliot in a flyweight bout at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 21, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports Friday.
ANALYSIS
Mokaev suffered a partially torn MCL in his victory over Jafel Filho back in March, but the fighter figures to be good to go for October. Mokaev is still undefeated as a professional fighter, and is currently sitting at 4-0 in the UFC. His opponent Elliot is also coming off a victory.
Dealing with MCL tear
FlyweightUFC
March 26, 2023
Mokaev suffered a partial MCL tear of his left knee in his victory over Jafel Filho at UFC 286 on Saturday and is expected to return to training in 6-to-8 weeks, Mike Heck of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mokaev improved to 4-0 in the UFC (and 9-0 overall) with his UFC 286 victory, but it wasn't without adversity. He had to withstand several compromising submission attempts from his opponent, and one of the leg locks was likely what caused the injury here. Given his projected rest time, it appears unlikely Mokaev would be able to book another fight until this summer, at the earliest.
Barely survives Jafel Filho
FlyweightUFC
March 18, 2023
Mokaev defeated Jafel Filho via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:32 of Round 3 at UFC 286 on Saturday in London.
ANALYSIS
Plenty of knowledgeable people feel Mokaev has the potential to be a future UFC champion at some point down the road. Well, in order to be a champion you need to fight through difficult circumstances, which Mokaev did here. He was cruising to a decision win on the strength of his trademark grappling game only to find himself in a deep, vicious leg lock midway through Round 3. Filho appeared to be seconds from earning the stoppage before Mokaev was able to pull through and eventually earn a submission win of his own. Muhammad was visibly limping after the fight, so it may be a while before we see the top prospect back in the cage. In the meantime, he improves to 4-0 in the UFC as he continues his climb at 125 pounds.
